Samira travelled to Santiago, Chile from 20 until 22 September with the European Parliament delegation to the EU-Chile Joint Parliamentary Committee.
Samira is the rapporteur in the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee for the negotiations for the modernisation of the trade pillar of the Association Agreement with Chile. The visit focused on the negotiations for the modernisation of the Association Agreement, as well as the developments in Chile.
Samira notes on the visit and the modernisation negotiations:
“The future of trade agreements is based on rules and values. For this agreement, I am therefore committed to promoting gender equality, sustainable development and human rights. These are three topics that I always bring up in my conversations about this agreement, and trade in general.”
Samira had the opportunity to speak with the minister of energy and climate, but also the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, and the Deputy Minister for Trade. Additionally, experts on women’s rights and the rights of indigenous peoples discussed with MEPs about the role of women and indigenous people in Chile. The delegation also met with the Constitutional Convention, who is in the process of drafting a new constitution.
